Sleep No More By Susan Crandall

Sleep No More
By Susan Crandall
Pages 400
Five Fun Facts

About The Book:
The night was always Abby Whitman's enemy. As a young girl she walked in her sleep, and one night, she started a fire that scarred her sister for life and left Abby with unbearable guilt . . . and a loneliness that echoes within her. Now Abby has begun blacking out again-with apparently fatal results. A car accident has killed the son of a prominent family. Even though the evidence seems to exonerate her, Abby is plagued by doubts-and soon by mysterious threats. Psychiatrist Dr. Jason Coble is intrigued by Abby and offers to help her explore the dark recesses of her mind.

My Thoughts: I read this book in one reading session. Why? Because I was immediately drawn into the story by Abby Whitman's character.  If you read the book information above, you know the guilt and life altering memories Abby lives with. But when I read that she never slept under the same roof with anyone for fear of causing them injury, my heart connected with this vulnerable and lonely woman who has the inner strength to deny herself, to keep those she loves safe.

Jason Coble, the local psychiatrist, makes a good counter-part to Abby's character. He's sensitive, vulnerable where his children are concerned, and sincerely drawn to the troubled Abby Whitman. Mixing these characters with danger, mystery, and intrigue will give you this satisfying and thoroughly entertaining read.

Teaser Snippet:
~ Just days ago she'd thought she would never feel more vulnerable than she did when she'd discovered she'd been sleepwalking again. She'd been so wrong. This was a million times worse. Vulnerable, violated, and victimized.

The Choice by Suzanne Woods Fisher

The Choice
By Suzanne Woods Fisher
pages 308

About The Book:

One moment, Carrie Weaver is planning to elope with Lancaster Barnstormer Solomon Riehl, leaving their Amish community behind. The next, she is staring into a future as broken as her heart. Now Carrie faces a choice. An opportunity. But will this decision, this moment in time, change her life forever?

About The Author:
Suzanne is a wife and mom, raiser of puppies for Guide Dogs for the Blind, and an author of Christian books, both non-fiction and fiction.

Her relatives on my mother's side are Old Order German Baptist Brethren, also known as Dunkards. That's where her interest in Anabaptist traditions began. Suzanne's grandfather was born into a family of 13 children, started his career as a teacher in a one-room school house in Franklin County, Pennsylvania, and ended it as one of the very first publishers of Christianity Today. "We called him "Deardad" even though he was a very stern fellow. Still, Deardad's life inspired me to write."

After college, Suzanne was a freelance writer for magazines and became a contributing editor to Christian Parenting Today. Her work has been featured in Today's Christian Woman, Marriage Partnership, Worldwide Challenge, among others. She took the plunge into books a few years ago and now she's hooked. My Thoughts:
The very first thing I'd like my readers to know is that I loved reading this story. WOW! It's just a wonderful journey through the complexity of life's choices. Carrie Weaver is a strong-minded young woman who isn't afraid to make hard decisions. She's imperfect, like the rest of us, but she's tenacious, sincere, and loyal. These qualities see her through the repercussions of some of her decisions and their adverse effects on her life and others, as well.  As a reader, I was surprised by some subtle twists that took me in a completely different direction than I was expecting. How fun is that? Each character was unique and I loved meeting every one of them. As I progressed from page to page, I couldn't figure out exactly how Carrie's story would end. I appreciated how the author held me suspended until near the end of the book before she allowed me to glimpse a very satisfying conclusion. This is definitely a five star read for me.

Teaser Snippet:
~ Carrie jerked her shoulders out of his grip. "Stoptelling me what I need! Nobody knows what I need.'

~"What do you need, Carrie?' Abel looked at Carrie with such sweet sorrow it took the fight clean out of her.

Book Bomb and Author's Talk with Suzanne Woods Fisher on February 15th

One Picture = 1000 Words - # 3

You've heard the saying that "a single picture is worth a thousand words" and we all know that to be true. As a writer, I have used this exercise many times to jump start that part of my brain that daydreams, imagines, wonders, and creates. Variations of light and shadow combined with soft slivers of sensuous color do magical things when we least expect it. They inspire and awe us. They demand that we interpret their beauty with whatever medium is at hand. For a writer, poet, or reader, that would be words. Play along with me as I periodically post a photo along with my interpretation. Please add yours in the comment area, as well. It can be a paragraph, or just a single word. The important thing is to free your imagination. Allow it to go wherever it will and to bring back what only you can find.
For me, this photo brings to mind such words as: Romance, Reflection, Promises, Separation, Unopened letter, Unknown future. Following up on that train of thought, I now try to write something that uses both the feeling the photo conjures and the actual description of the photo. It's great fun and helps me keep my thought processes fluid and unrestrained.

Narrative Exercise: I couldn't stop shaking as I stared at the beautifully laid breakfast table. Two delicate pink roses lay nestled together, their dewy petals begging to be touched. Heart shaped chocolates perched atop a pink envelope with my name across the front and the words, "So sweet a love that death cannot part."

I raised a trembling hand to my mouth and felt the beads of perspiration forming on my skin. So innocent a scene, so promising of love and happiness. Why then, did terror threaten to suck the breath from my lungs?

A Highlander's Destiny
Pages 384

When the worlds of Mortal and Fae collide, the magic of true love is put to the test.

JESSE CORYELL is a man adrift in life, searching for his destiny. He doesn't trust women; too many have chased him for his money and power. He's tried to lose himself in his work, taking on the worst mankind has to offer, but as a Guardian and Fae descendent, what he really needs is to find his true love. When he sets out to help a mysterious woman find her sister, what he gets is
much more than he bargained for, battling an undeniable attraction to his sexy new client while fighting to save her life and rescue her sister.

DESTINY NOBLE is desperately searching for her missing kid sister. Not even her own attempted abduction will stop her in her quest. Abandoned by everyone she's ever loved, losing Leah is the last straw. Authorities have declared the girl a runaway, but Destiny knows better. Her dreams have shown her the truth. They've also shown her Jesse.

Jesse and Destiny race against time to save an innocent girl from a powerful ancient evil. Will true love be their only weapon or will they each sacrifice their own destiny in the process?

My Thoughts:  With the disappearance of her beloved sister, Leah, Destiny Noble's life narrows down to one thing, finding Leah. In Highlander's Destiny, another story in the Daughters of Glen series, author Melissa Mayhue flings us into the world of the Fae along with Destiny. Of course, like all good romances, we have a gorgeous hero in the person of Jesse Coryell. A man with a mission, Jesse doesn't always trust what Destiny reveals about her visions.  Which for a lot of this story, forces them to work separately, together. The plot moves with good pacing, the descriptions are really, really good, and the conflict resolves itself in a believable manner. If you're a fan of the Daughters of Glen series, I don't think you'll be disappointed with author Mellissa Mayhue's new book, A Highlander's Destiny.

Teaser Snippet:
"Destiny's mind crowded with questions, the shock of what she'd just seen blocking them all. It couldn't be. None of it was possible.
And yet...she'd seen the proof with her own eyes."

"Waste Not, Want Not" and Make it Delicious

"Waste Not, Want Not" and Make it Delicious!
By Lidia Matticchio Bastianich and Tanya Bastianich Manuali,
Author of Lidia Cooks from the Heart of Italy: A Feast of 175 Regional Recipes

There is no more appropriate time than now to think about how and why we cook. Food is a way of connecting with the people who surround us. Through it, we communicate emotions like love, compassion and understanding, and there is no better opportunity to communicate with our children than at the table. It's where we can discuss our values of life that are important to us as individuals, as a family and as a part of the world we live in.
As overconsumption and greed have come to haunt us, now is a time for reflection. We should be looking back at the generations before us to understand their approach to the table. Growing food, shepherding animals, foraging for the gifts of nature is all part of respecting food. Nothing needs to be wasted. Bread can be recycled and used in soups, casseroles, lasagnas and desserts. Water is carefully conserved as in the pasta recipe I share below where the same water in which vegetables are cooked is used to cook the pasta that follows, and then that is saved for soups or for making risotto.
When one respects the food we prepare, it also leads to a more sensible and balanced intake of proteins, legumes and vegetables.
So "waste not, want not" and make it delicious!
Excerpt from Lidia Cooks from the Heart of Italy (Alfred A. Knopf, 2009)

FRESH CAVATELLI WITH CAULIFLOWER
Maccarun ch'I Hiucc
Serves 6
Cauliflower is one of my favorite vegetables, and I regret that many people don't sufficiently appreciate its unique flavor and nutritional value. This is not the case in Molise, where it is cooked often and creatively, as exemplified by the following two simple vegetarian pasta dishes. The first recipe, maccarun ch'i hiucc, is zesty with garlic and peperoncino.
½ teaspoon kosher salt, plus more for the pasta pot
½ cup extra-virgin olive oil
7 plump garlic cloves, peeled and sliced
½ teaspoon peperoncino flakes, or to taste
2 tablespoons chopped fresh Italian parsley
1 large head cauliflower, cut in small florets
1 batch (1½ pounds) Fresh Cavatelli (preceding recipe), or 1 pound dried pasta
1 cup freshly grated pecorino (or half pecorino and half Grana Padano or Parmigiano-Reggiano, for a milder flavor)
Recommended equipment: A large pasta pot; a heavy-bottomed skillet or sauté pan, 12 inch diameter or larger
Fill the large pot with salted water (at least 6 quarts water with 1 tablespoon salt), and heat to a boil.
Pour the olive oil into the skillet, set over medium-high heat, and scatter in the sliced garlic. Let the garlic start to sizzle, then toss in the peperoncino and parsley; stir and cook for a minute. Ladle in a cup of the pasta cooking water, stir well, and adjust the heat to keep the liquid in the skillet simmering and reducing gradually while you cook the cauliflower and pasta.
With the pasta water at a rolling boil, drop in the cauliflower florets, and cook them for about 3 minutes, until barely tender. Drop in the cavatelli, stir, and return the water quickly to a boil. Cook another 4 to 5 minutes, until the cauliflower is fully tender and the pasta is al dente (if you are using dried pasta, it will, of course, take longer).
Lift out the florets and cavatelli with a spider or strainer, drain briefly, and spill them into the skillet. Toss well, to coat all the pasta and vegetable pieces with the garlicky dressing, then turn off the heat, sprinkle over the skillet the grated cheese, and toss again. Heap the cauliflower and cavatelli in warm bowls, and serve immediately.

CHOCOLATE BREAD PARFAIT
Pane di Cioccolato al Cucchiaio
Serves 6
This recalls for me the chocolate-and-bread sandwiches that sometimes were my lunch, and always a special treat. And it is another inventive way surplus is used in Umbrian cuisine, with leftover country bread serving as the foundation of an elegant layered dessert. Though it is soaked with chocolate and espresso sauce and buried in whipped cream, the bread doesn't disintegrate, and provides a pleasing textural contrast in every heavenly spoonful.
8 ounces bittersweet or semisweet chocolate, finely chopped
8 ounces country-style white bread, crusts removed
½ cup freshly brewed espresso
2 tablespoons dark rum
2 tablespoons sugar
1 ½ cups chilled heavy cream
1 cup sliced almonds, toasted
Recommended equipment: A large rimmed tray or baking sheet, such as a half-sheet pan (12 by 18 inches); a spouted measuring cup, 1 pint or larger; 6 parfait glasses or wineglasses, preferably balloon-shaped
Put the chopped chocolate in a bowl set in a pan of hot (not boiling) water. When the chocolate begins to melt, stir until completely smooth. Keep it warm, over the water, off the heat.
Slice the bread into ½-inch-thick slices, and lay them flat in one layer, close together, on the tray or baking sheet.
Pour the warm espresso into a spouted measuring cup, stir in the rum and sugar until sugar dissolves, then stir in half the melted chocolate. Pour the sauce all over the bread slices, then flip them over and turn them on the tray, to make sure all the surfaces are coated. Let the bread absorb the sauce for a few minutes.
Meanwhile, whip the cream until soft peaks form, by hand or with an electric mixer.
To assemble the parfaits: Break the bread into 1-inch pieces. Use half the pieces to make the bottom parfait layer in the six serving glasses, dropping an equal amount of chocolatey bread into each. Scrape up some of the unabsorbed chocolate sauce that remains on the baking sheet, and drizzle a bit over the bread layers. Next, drop a layer of whipped cream in the glasses, using up half the cream. Top the cream layer with toasted almonds, using half the nuts.
Repeat the layering sequence: drop more soaked bread into each glass, drizzle over it the chocolate sauce from the tray and the remaining melted chocolate. Dollop another layer of whipped cream in the glasses, using it all up, and sprinkle the remaining almonds on top of each parfait. This dessert is best when served immediately while the melted chocolate is still warm and runny.

A Black Tie Affair by Sherrill Bodine

A Black Tie Affair
by Sherrill Bodine
240 pages
ISBN-10: 0446618594
ISBN-13: 978-0446618595

About The Book: Fashion curator Athena Smith will do anything to get her perfectly manicured hands on the Clayworth family's celebrated couture collection for her exhibit. So when she's called in to make sure the gowns are the real deal, she's ecstatic...until a dress she's examining turns out to be loaded with toxins (talk about killer threads!) and Athena faints, only to wake up face-to-face with the One That Got Away, notorious Chicago bachelor Drew Clayworth.

Drew still believes Athena betrayed him all those years ago, and he's sure he can't trust her. But when the priceless gowns go missing, she offers to help track them down. Reluctantly allied in the quest, Drew and Athena are soon stunned by the barely restrained passion still sizzling between them...and memories both bitter and sweet. Is their new partnership just a business arrangement? Or is this something more than...

My Thoughts:  Athena Smith's excursion to the Clayworth Secret Closet located under an Illinois soybean field begins this story and sets us on a skin-tingling romp through couture fashion and intrigue. And since there is some old, unfinished business, of the romantic kind, between her and Drew Clayworth, it doesn't help that she ends up hospitalized with hallucinations after having entered the Secret Closet to examine a dress collection. Then, to her horror and that of the Clayworth's, the dresses are stolen.

This is a smooth read, but I must warn you, a lot of loose ends are left dangling. I can only imagine that the author intends to tie them up in a forthcoming book. We'll have to wait and see. It's a light mixture of romance with a little mystery.

Baby Animals Live with Me by Pearl C. Rodgers - Hatch

BABY ANIMALS LIVE WITH ME

By  Pearl C. Rodgers-Hatch

About The Book: Do you know what it's like to have playful, purring kittens pounce about with curious, sniffing puppies? Have you ever tried to wiggle your nose like a dwarf rabbit, as he hops, hops, hops? In this wonderful collection of children's poetry, Pearl C. Rodgers-Hatch describes the playful antics of small furry friends, delighting in their games and manners. As she and the animals agree to take in another resident, we see that her main lesson is one of compassion, a lesson no one is too young to learn.

With its delightful illustrations, Baby Animals Live with Me is a collection that all children would love to read or have read to them by a loved adult.

About the Author: A native of Britain, Pearl C. Rodgers-Hatch currently lives in California with her husband, Stephen, where she works as an elementary daycare teacher. The mother of three, she enjoys writing, reading, tennis, interior design, and fashion display.

My Thoughts: The poetry in this little book is fun, warm, and playful. Along with the cover illustration, no child could miss the message that it's so easy to love the baby animals in their world. Whether that animal be a rabbit, puppy, kitten, doesn't matter because they're all deserving of love and gentle attention. I also thought this was a wonderful learning tool, especially for home-schooled children. A vocabulary list with definitions appear in the back that match the words underlined throughout the story's pages. Entertainment and education are both strong points for this book.

Susan Palmquist Interviews Hank Phillippi Ryan

How do I begin to tell you about my first interviewee of the year? She’s had success in just about every venture of her life. Hank Phillippi Ryan is a multi Emmy Award (yes, 26 of them!) winning investigative reporter who currently works for Boston’s 7News.

She’s been the vice president of the Midwest Chapter of the National Beatles Fan Club, she’s worked at Rolling Stone magazine. She’s interviewed famous people like Prince Charles and Warren Beatty. She’s undercover to catch some bad guys. Oh, and don’t let me forget to tell you that she also writes great books too. Her first Prime Time won the prestigious Agatha Award. Her latest, Drive Time is released next month (February 2010). So here without further ado is my chat with the very talented Hank. www.hankphillippiryan.com

Susan Palmquist (SP)-Growing up, did you ever think you’d be an investigative reporter?
Hank Phillippi Ryan (HPR)-Definitely—not. You know, I have a funny juxtaposition of desire to be in the spotlight—and sheer terror of being in the spotlight. I love my job in TV—and have to go live and unrehearsed all the time. Confession: I’m still terrified every time. I want to be perfect, and when you’re on live, you can’t possibly be. That’s one reason why I love investigative reporting—there’s more time to work, and dig, and polish, and produce, It’s like making a little movie, and I can make it as perfect as possible. Anyway, my sisters and I used to create musical shows when we were all young, and perform for our parents in our back yard. I did acting in high school and college. I wanted to be a DJ on the radio for a long time!  But I thought I would be an English teacher, or a lawyer for the Mine Workers union, or for awhile, a political activist. (My mother, though, says she always knew I would be a television reporter—but I think that was just her way of rationalizing that all I did as a pre-teen and teenager was read books and watch TV.) I knew from my first Nancy Drew that I loved mysteries. Nancy was my first best friend—I was a geeky unpopular kid, and it was such a relief to go home and hang out with Nancy. She was smart, and made it be okay to be smart. She was confident and inquisitive and resourceful. I loved that.  But being a TV reporter was not in my sights. Little did I know!

SP-How did you get started in that type of journalism?
HPR-I got into TV by chance. I had worked as a radio reporter (hired because, as I informed the radio station, they didn’t have any women working at the station! Hey. It was the seventies.) But after a few years working in Washington DC (on Capitol Hill as a legislative aide and then for Rolling Stone Magazine,) Rolling Stone closed its Washington office and I needed a new job. I went back home to Indianapolis, and applied for a job as a TV reporter. It was 1975. I had covered politics in Washington, and the news director of the station figured he could teach me to be a TV reporter. (This was incredibly risky—I had never taken journalism and didn’t know one thing about TV. But I wasn’t afraid and I knew I could do it.) Problem was, I should have been afraid! I quickly learned I had no idea what I was doing. I went home every night for the first two weeks, sobbing. Because I thought I would never understand it. Soon after—it hit me--oh, I get it! And I have adored it ever since. I took a chance, and found my calling. I started as the political reporter (and was also the movie reviewer, of all things! At age 26.)  At various times I’ve been the medical reporter, a weekend anchor, and an on the road feature reporter.  When I  came to Boston, I was the funny feature reporter--cat shows, sports features, poems, and anything quirky or funny. They used to call me “something out of nothing productions,” because I could find a story in anything. But starting in 1988, I covered the presidential election, doing long elaborate think pieces. It was terrific. And then I told my news director I didn’t want to be the funny one anymore. I wanted to be the serious one. And from that day on, I've been the investigative reporter. And I love it every day.

SP-When I was reading about all the things you’ve done as a reporter... like being chased by criminals, confronting corrupt politicians, etc, it’s almost like immersing myself in a nail biting novel. Have any of these experiences found their way into your books?
HPR-There’s a huge been-there-done-that element to the books—I’ve wired myself with hidden cameras, confronted corrupt politicians, chased down criminals…been in disguise, been stalked, and threatened and had many a door slammed in my face. I’ve had people confess to murder, and others, from prison, insist they were innocent.  So when that happens to Charlie, it’s fair to imagine me. Although the plots are completely from my imagination, those are real-life experiences!

SP-How did the character of Charlotte ‘Charlie’ McNally come about?
HPR-What a great question. I have NO idea. She was born when I got a weird spam in my email. It was what looked like lines from a play by Shakespeare.  I thought--why would someone send a spam like that?  And it crossed my mind--maybe it's a secret message. I still get goose bumps telling you about it. And I knew, after all those years of wanting to write a mystery, that was my plot. And that turned out to be the Agatha-winning PRIME TIME. But Charlie? Well, I knew I had a good story, but who would tell it? A television reporter, of course. And she just instantly popped into my head. Named, fully formed. I knew her perfectly. The other characters were more difficult to get to know. But now, Charlie surprises me a lot! And I love when that happens.

SP-Is she anything like you? Has she ever done anything you wouldn’t do to get your story?
HPR-When my husband talks about Charlie, he calls her “you.” As in—when “you” are held at gunpoint, when you track down the bad guys, when you solve the mystery… and I have to remind him, “Sweetheart, it’s fiction. It didn’t really happen.” But a couple of things: I’ve been a TV reporter for more than 30 years. (Yes, really.) And so it would be silly, in writing a mystery about TV, not to use my own experiences. Think about it—as a TV reporter, you can never be wrong! Never be one minute late. Never choose the wrong word or miscalculate. You can never have a bad hair day, because it’ll be seen by millions of people! It’s high-stakes and high-stress—literally, people’s lives at stake--and I really wanted to convey that in the books. And everything that TV people do and say in the books is authentic and genuine. (Of course, Charlie can say things I can’t say, and reveal things I can’t reveal.) We’re both devoted journalists, and over-focused on our jobs. But Charlotte McNally is different, too. She’s single—I’m happily married. She’s ten years younger than I am, and so is facing different choices and dilemmas. She’s braver than I am, certainly. Funnier. And a much better driver.

SP-You’ve got four books under your belt, you’ve won an Agatha, and been compared to Lisa Scottoline. Will there come a time when you say goodbye to journalism to focus full time on your fiction?
HRP-Ain't that the question! I still smile in delight every time I see my Agatha teapot. And when the starred review in Library Journal for DRIVE TIME compared me to Lisa Scottoline, well, I burst into tears. But I still love my job in TV. So--you could ask me that question every day, and every day I'd have a different answer. And I guess the bottom line is: who knows?

SP-Any plans to write a non Charlotte McNally novel?
HPR-Yup. Absolutely. It's in the works. You heard it here first.

SP-Any other genre you want to tackle?
HPR-Yup.  :-)  It’s in the works. You heard it here first.

SP-Your husband’s a criminal defense attorney. Does he read your work or give you any tips or even ideas for plots?
HPR-He’s the most patient man on the planet. Yes, he's really the only person who reads my pages while they’re in process. When I first started writing PRIME TIME, I'd give him my five pages or so a day, and I'd hear him laughing and I was so delighted!  And he would tell me every day how terrific it was. Then, about fifty pages in, I went in for my daily pat on the back. And he had a funny look on his face.  "Honey?" he asked. "Is something going to happen soon?"  So I knew I had some work to do. Ideas for plots? Ah, no, not really. I'm always running ideas by him, to see if he thinks they’re plausible and believable.  And sometimes he'll come up with just the perfect little thing I need to pull something together. But we think very differently. He’s much more--wedded to reality.

SP-Your first two books were published by Harlequin Next but then the line was axed. Did you have other Charlie McNally books planned or already written? What was your reaction to the news?
HPR-Oh, yeah, that was briefly terrible. I got the news the day--I know it sounds crazy but it’s true--the day I finished book 3, AIR TIME. I was really happy about that, because I'm not sure I would have had the emotional wherewithal to persevere in the face of an imprint that was dying.  I--well, I freaked out. Then I went on a mental hunt for the good news in it, which was not terribly successful, I must say. But then--as so often happens--the good news emerged. A week or two later, my agent called to tell me the series had been moved to MIRA!  That was fantastic. And the rest is history.

SP-You’ve won accolades from some of the top writers in the business including some of my favorite authors like Sara Paretsky and Sue Grafton. Any tips you can offer for writing top notch mysteries and creating a great character like Charlie?
HPR-Well, thank you! Yes, it’s great, and Sara Paretsky and Sue Grafton are my idols. (They’re also wonderfully generous, and truly authentic. I have three little talismans on my desk that Sue Grafton gave me, and I look at them every day.) Tips? Well, I read an interview with the poet Anne Sexton some time ago--and she was asked, "What, truly, can a creative writing teacher give her students?" And her answer was:" Courage."  I think that's so wonderful. And I think my advice would be similar--just don’t be afraid. Fear is a waste of time. Write your book. One page at a time. You can do it.

SP-Any mistakes you’ve made along the way, have you learned anything from them?
HPR-Hah. That’s another long blog for another day. Mistakes? Ah, on a huge level, people always yell at me for working all the time. ALL the time. Is that a mistake? None of this would have happened without that. Would I change it? I have to say no. So is that a mistake? I'm not sure.  On a tiny level, I should have put together a mailing list of bookstores. Still haven’t done that. Wish I had.

SP-What’s next for you?
HPR-Exactly what I'm trying to figure out. DRIVE TIME comes out February 1, with fantastic blurbs from the much-missed and iconic Robert B. Parker and Suzanne Brockmann and Margaret Maron and Carla Neggers and a rave starred review from Library Journal. So I'm hoping people love it. (And I'll be visiting lots of places across the US--hope some of our readers come visit! And then...we’ll see. I can't tell you how excited I am.

DENISE'S DAILY DOZEN By Denise Austin

DENISE'S DAILY DOZEN By Denise Austin
From Denise Austin comes the perfect health book for anyone who wants to live better but just can't seem to find the time. Much more than just another exercise book, Denise's Daily Dozen covers a whole range of health and diet related concepts yet manages it all in a no-stress, time-conscious program of 12's. At it's core, this book contains the minimum daily requirements to keep the reader flexible, strong and trim. Organized simply into seven chapters, which equal the seven days of the week, it covers a full week in daily allotments. Each day will have it's own focus from Monday being "fat burning day" to Sunday's "recharge and rejuvenate."

Denise has created a total body program, including a 7-day balanced meal plan that includes healthy recipes, and a workout that encompasses 12 exercises done in 12 minutes each day. Everyone can take just 12 minutes, at whatever time of the day works for them, and turn it over to these simple and fun exercises. Cardio, toning, yoga and breathing exercises...they're all here but in a way the maximizes effect while minimizing time.

Beyond a dozen exercises for each day of the week this book will include many other of Denise's dozens for each day.
My Thoughts:
If you’re anything like me, to even begin to focus on the concept of dieting takes a great deal of motivation, and incentives galore. Both, of which, I’m happy to say, I found in Denise Austin’s book, Denise’s Daily Dozen.
I loved the section on Twelve Favorite Fidget-cisers, and you will too. Reading this section changed how I viewed my own kitchen. WOW, who knew I had my own private workout gym! It’s fun, it’s easy, and most importantly, it’s doable for us ordinary people without health spa memberships.
The FAQ section is also outstanding, in that it actually answered the questions that came readily to my mind.
Illustrated exercises, practical recipes with ingredients easily found in my grocery store, tips, lots of lists and boxes with motivational notes, make this health and fitness book a great buy.
Who would have thought that exercising 12 little minutes a day using 12 simple moves could produce results? And no, I’m not going to demonstrate those for you, Denise Austin does that beautifully in her book.

Knit, Purl, Die By Anne Canadeo

KNIT, PURL, DIE
By Anne Canadeo
Pages: 288
Meet the Black Sheep knitters -- five smart, funny
women who love to knit, gossip, and solve crimes.

Gloria Sterling had it all -- money, looks, and a new sexy young husband. So when she's found floating face down in her own swimming pool, shock waves ripple through tiny Plum Harbor. At the Black Sheep Knitting Shop, Maggie Messina and her circle are devastated to lose their dear friend -- a woman as colorful as her fabulous yarn creations.
The police are quick to call it an accident, but sorting out Gloria's final hours leaves too many loose ends to satisfy her friends. The vivacious, fiftysomething cougar had her French manicured tips in more than a few pots, and the threads of some inside deals stashed in her chic knitting tote.

Who was the last person to see Gloria alive on that quiet summer night? Two empty wine glasses suggest she wasn't home alone knitting the entire evening.... The Black Sheep need to know the truth and set out to unravel -- stitch by stitch -- the weighty secrets that pulled poor Gloria under.

My Thoughts: Cozy mysteries are always fun and Knit, Purl, Die by Anne Canadeo is no exception. The ladies of the Black Sheep knitters group are soul mates in their shared love of knitting and their penchant for sleuthing. Each of the main characters, Maggie, Lucy, and Dana have full, eventful lives that keeps them interesting. But when the author mixes them all together into their little knitting group, strange things happen. They meld into one relentless, clue-hunting force that just won't stop. This light 'who-dun-it' takes place in the cozy town of Plum Harbor, one of those homey towns you like to happen upon when traveling. If humorous, light-hearted mysteries are you reading preference, then you've found one to be added to your To-Be-Read- list.

Teaser Snippet:
" He shook his head, as if to shake out the disturbing images. then he leaned forward, covering his face with his hands.
The Black Sheep knitters sat silently. They exchanged glances, but Lucy could see that no one knew what to tell him. Not even Dana."

The Culture of Excess By Jay Slosar - Virtual Book Tour

THE CULTURE OF EXCESS By J. R. Slosar

About The Book:

In the wake of buckling markets, banks knocked to their knees, and massive amounts of presumed wealth revealed as the product of self-deception and breathtaking criminality, an age of indulgence has dramatically impacted American life. Economically, we understand how it happened, but why it happened is more of a mystery. What psychological factors fueled the years of excess and, more important, how do we refocus ourselves for a more rational, self-controlled future?

As J. R. Slosar shows in this urgent, sometimes startling volume, the nation’s fast-and-loose approach to money was, in fact, a symptom of a more widespread pattern of excessive behavior. In The Culture of Excess: How America Lost Self-Control and Why We Need to Redefine Success, Slosar portrays an America where the drive to succeed and the fear of missing out manifested itself not only in self-entitled corporate fraud, but in everything from sharp rises in obesity and cosmetic medical procedures to equally troubling increases in eating disorders, panic attacks, and outbreaks of uncontrollable rage.

Illustrating its thesis with numerous vignettes and case studies, The Culture of Excess is the first book to assess the impact of economic and social factors on the nation’s psychological well-being. It shows how capitalism, technology, and media interact and become additive factors in the loss of self-control, and it explains how the compromises made in adapting to intense economic competition lead to a false sense of self and reality. Narcissism, productive narcissism, psychopathy, rigidity and self destruction, perfectionism, the illusion of success, and identity achievement all come into play as Slosar diagnoses the psychological drivers behind this indulgent age, offering his prescription for helping “Generation Me” become “Generation We.”

My Thoughts:
When I first started reading this book I was amazed at how many of the unacceptable traits of excess I personally display. Not a very pretty revelation, as you can well imagine. But a very powerful reason to keep reading, which I did.
The cultural narcissism that Author Jay Slosar explains in detail, with accompanying stats, is downright scary. Another exposure is how religion gets caught up in today’s Market Place Mania. This is consumer manipulation on a grand scale. Disturbing!
With healthcare being on everyone’s minds these days, I encourage you to pay very close attention to Chapter 5, HEALTH CARE: Waste, Excess, and Brokers.
As you read The Culture of Excess by Slosar, grab a dictionary, grab a notepad, and keep a bottle of your favorite headache remedy at hand. Not because reading this work is painful, but because the information Slosar dispenses will, I guarantee, make your head hurt as you contemplate the intolerable state of our society, of which you and I are fully a part.

Teaser Snippets:
“Consumer choices are not fully influenced by free will, but by cultural demands.”
“Our adaptation involves accepting as real an environment that bombards us with hype, exaggerations, and outright falsehoods.”
“I guess we could say we have a great health care system—as long as you do not get sick.”

Veracity by Laura Bynum

VERACITY By Laura Bynum
Pages: 384

About The Book:
Harper Adams was six years old in 2012 when an act of viral terrorism wiped out one-half of the country's population. Out of the ashes rose a new government, the Confederation of the Willing, dedicated to maintaining order at any cost. The populace is controlled via government-sanctioned sex and drugs, a brutal police force known as the Blue Coats, and a device called the slate, a mandatory implant that monitors every word a person speaks. To utter a Red-Listed, forbidden word is to risk physical punishment or even death.

But there are those who resist. Guided by the fabled "Book of Noah," they are determined to shake the people from their apathy and ignorance, and are prepared to start a war in the name of freedom. The newest member of this resistance is Harper -- a woman driven by memories of a daughter lost, a daughter whose very name was erased by the Red List. And she possesses a power that could make her the underground warriors' ultimate weapon -- or the instrument of their destruction.

In the tradition of Margaret Atwood's The Handmaid's Tale, Laura Bynum has written an astonishing debut novel about a chilling, all-too-plausible future in which speech is a weapon and security comes at the highest price of all.

My Thoughts: When reading the back cover of this book, it described the story as reading like a modern-day '1984' and 'Fahrenheit 451'. I have to tell you that this set me on edge a little, as both those books are old favorites of mine. So to say I was geared to be a tough critic, is putting it mildly.

The story is about Words. We use them daily, take them for granted, and abuse them without thought. Veracity plunges its readers into a time when Words are a controlled substance, and some words, the Red Listed ones, are denied altogether. The kind of governmental change that brings this eradication of the basic freedom of speech is horrifying. The 'Pandemic', as described, is so possible it raised the hairs on my arms like they were little soldiers standing at attention. Scary, thought-provoking, thoroughly entertaining, are all descriptions that fit this book.

If there were a down side for me, it was the way the story was formatted into flashbacks and forwards. This may not be a factor for most readers, but it robbed me of some of the enjoyment, as I had to several times pull myself out of the story in order to readjust myself in the proper time frame.

Teaser Snippet:

"There is a cutoff age, the man tells us. Four. I'm two years older than that but don't look it. Could pass for four. My mother says this is a blessing. And the Confederation has lost my records or they'd have known about my special abilities, too. Another blessing."

Seduced By A Rogue by Amanda Scott

SEDUCED BY A ROGUE
Amanda Scott
400 Pages
ISBN-13: 978-0446541343

A fair-haired beauty at 19, Lady Mairi is heiress apparent to her father Lord Dunwythie's rich barony. He has carefully taught her how to manage their estates, but a feud between his clan and the Maxwell clan is brewing as the two families edge toward a clan war - their dispute over money owed. Mairi's father believes he owes nothing, and of course Mairi sides with him.

When the impulsive and blue-eyed Rob Maxwell chances to meet Mairi in a barley field, they feel instant attraction, despite their families' antagonisms. Knowing he must put his clan first, Rob enacts a plan to force Dunwythie to pay his debt: Rob kidnaps Mairi, making the abduction appear the work of a stranger; then he and his sheriff-brother offer to help Dunwythis rescue his daughter IF, and only if, he will pay them the monies due. Yet after Rob captures Mairi's body, she captures his heart. When Dunwythie summons the aid of the most powerful clan in all Scotland (the Douglases), clan-tensions rise to a fever pitch. Love takes its own feverish course, as Mairi and Rob join forces to prevent a clash between hot-headed clans, and to protect their budding love.

About The Author:  Amanda Scott is the author of over 50 romance novels and the recipient of the Romance Writers of America's prestigious RITA Award. She lives in Folsom, California, outside of Sacramento. She is a fourth-generation Californian. Her website is: http://home.att.net/~amandascott

My Thoughts: Mairi Dunwythie is a woman caught between two worlds, the one allowed to women of her time, and the world of men she might attain if she inherits her father's estate. But before either can be decided upon, Robert Maxwell decides to kidnap her for political and personal reasons. Of course, he's a handsome rogue and the fact that he doesn't treat her as a prisoner but more like an honored guest makes it hard for her to ignore his charm.

The historical detail is woven into this story seamlessly by it's author, enriching the reader's experience instead of detracting from it. It's fun, adventurous, and there are just enough twists to sustain the tension level throughout the whole plot. Whether or not these two characters find a way to attain their personal goals and, at the same time, secure their love for one another, I'll leave you to find between the pages of Amanda Scott's new Historical Romance, Seduced By A Rogue.

Teaser Snippets:

~ "And what if I had?" she retorted with one slipper in hand, the other still on. "Are you now going to command me every move and decision?"

~ "I said I was sorry," Mairi said, wishing as she saw his expression tighten that she had not spoken so curtly.

Beautiful Mess The Story of Diamond Rio By Diamond Rio

Beautiful Mess
The Story of Diamond Rio
By Diamond Rio

About The Book:
What made it possible for Diamond Rio to weather the storms inherent in the fickle world of fame and fortune and go more than two decades without a single lineup change? Any reader in search of transparency and a behind-the-scenes look into the life of the band as a unit as well as the individual lives of the players and singers will be well satisfied. Can true loyalty exist within the competitive, seemingly unforgiving music industry? In A Beautiful Mess, Marty Roe, Dan Truman, Jimmy Olander, Brian Prout, Gene Johnson, and Dana Williams each has an entire chapter devoted to his personal and professional life. A Beautiful Mess is a wild ride from the edge of disaster and a little-known secret to an ongoing heart-warming revival.

My Thoughts:  This unique hardcover edition of Beautiful Mess The Story of Diamond Rio lived up to the earlier reviews that I had read and to the book blurb. I chose this book because I've always been a fan of this group's music. They will be glad to know that I'm one of many fans who never had a clue Diamond Rio was in trouble. Ignorance is truly bliss.

While reading this story of their years of struggle, success, struggle, and succees, I felt as though I'd been invited into their inner circle of close friends. I experienced the frustration, hurdles, and failures that burdened their early years. I soared with them through the awards and rewards of their successful years. I gasped when learning of the disaster that almost brought them to their knees in more recent years.

The story is told with candor, humor, and tears. I especially appreciated the many photos that depicted each stage of their journey. Anyone who enjoys the music of this group will more than enjoy reading Beautiful Mess.

Teaser Snippet:
"Diamond Rio's story is a beautiful mess. And an inspiration for anyone who wants to know what's possible when a small group of people rolls up its sleeves and works together."

One Picture = 1000 Words - # 2

For me, this photo brings to mind such words as: Alien, Lost, Hidden, Quest, Survival. Following up on that train of thought, I now try to write something that uses both the feeling the photo conjures and the actual description of the photo. It's great fun and helps me keep my thought processes fluid and unrestrained.

Narrative Exercise: The golden, monotone landscape did nothing for my unusually good sense of direction. Neither did the myriad of jutting monoliths standing in rigid arrogance as they observed my puny efforts to navigate their terrain. Legend said that each marked the grave of an ancient queen of Azadral. But I sought only one, my own.

A Cutthroat Business by Bente Gallagher

A Cutthroat Business
A Savannah Martin Mystery By Bente Gallagher

COMING JUNE 2010.
Savannah Martin had heard that real estate was a cutthroat business, but who knew that was a literal definition? When she stumbles upon a murdered co-worker while showing a house to a dashingly handsome rogue her southern belle nature takes a back seat to Nancy-Drew-like detective skills, but will she solve the case or become the next victim?

Bente Gallagher also writes under the pen name Jennie Bentley for Berkley Press and currently has three books in her DIY mystery series.

My Thoughts:  WOW! This series and author were new to me, and I have to tell you that they're both great. In 'A Cutthroat Business', Bente Gallagher hooks you in the first page and doesn't let go until the last. And there is something for every reading preference in her writing. Tricky plot twists, rich description, likable characters, and some villainous characters you'll love to hate. My favorite is her humor. Not heavy, in-you-face humor, but subtle, sneak-up-on-you humor that will have you chuckling out loud.

The hero in this story, Rafe Collier, is straight out of my little black book of most loved 'alpha' types. And the heroine, Savannah Martin, while a capable, independent business woman, is still sweet and vulnerable. It was so amusing to watch as she pussy-footed around Rafe, not sure if he was an irresistible hunk or a killer. The elements of Mystery and Suspense weave in and around these two characters linking them in ways they both distrust, yet cannot resist.

Teaser Snippets:
"You ain't never forgotten me?" He grinned. White teeth flashed against golden skin, and a ghostly memory stirred, like an alligator in a swamp, but it subsided without breaking the surface.

Career Comeback by Lisa Johnson Mandell

CAREER COMEBACK by Lisa Johnson Mandell
Hardcover - 256 Pages
ISBN-13: 978-0446549653

About The Book:
Unfortunately, getting older can be a career killer. That's what entertainment journalist Lisa Johnson Mandell discovered when she sent out a resume that made her sound like an aged veteran. Her new career makeover guide-expanded from the Wall Street Journal article about revamping her "older" image to land her dream job-acknowledges that experience matters, but looking and acting up-to-date matter just as much. Mandell provides ten strategies for putting a youthful spin on resumes, Web pages, and personal presentation.

My Thoughts:
You may want to keep this book on your resource shelf. The information is applicable at any time but, in today’s down-sized, sluggish and, in some areas almost non-existent economy, you may find it to be a necessity. While it follows the true-life experience of Lisa Johnson Mandell, both sexes will find the advice personally useful.

I like lists and this book has plenty of them. For instance, a list of ways to figure out what you’re up against in today’s job market, and the things you can do to brand yourself or a new business concept.  Have you ever wondered if Botox worked on resumes, or, if you could interview like a Rock Star? Well, it does, and you can.

‘Shine Online’ is my favorite chapter, and why not, most of my work as a Romance Writer and Book Blogger happens online.  The book is well-structured, easy to follow, and contains advice anybody can implement, if they so choose.
