Author Linore Rose Burkard Guest Blogs

I know all the readers her at Between The Pages are going to enjoy this interview provided by Author Linore Rose Burkard.

Please enjoy my interview with Mr. Philip Mornay, the lead male character in Linore Rose Burkard's books, Before the Season Ends and The House In Grosvenor Square.

Mr. Mornay, we’re so pleased that you would grant us this interview. I know you’re busy readying for your upcoming wedding, so your time with us is all the more precious.

Miss Forsythe quite literally fell into your arms. Tell us what you saw the moment you looked into her face, her eyes, for the first time.

I would say, besides her obvious beauty, that I saw a complete and utter honesty—which intrigued me. Ariana’s eyes, you recall, are very large and striking. But they convey the sort of sincerity one seldom finds among the ton.

What is an inner quality Miss Forsythe possesses that drew you to her and will continue to draw your heart to hers?

Miss Forsythe possesses a fierce pride, and yet is all sweetness; she is innocent but no fool; she is beautiful, but no flirt; she wears the latest modes, but is no snob. She is true to her convictions under all circumstances, and honest in her conversation. (smile) She tells me more with a single look than some people do in pages of talk.
What do you love best about the story of you and Miss Forsythe?
The ending, of course. She has agreed to marry me, and I am like a man who has been given a new life. [Pause. A small frown.] I was not aware of the depths of my need—either for her, or for God. I am eternally grateful to have both in my life.

Any ideas on the recent attempt to abduct her?

I believe it was mere opportunity. A well bred young woman on the street at night with only a link boy to guard her was too much temptation for those cowardly blackguards. The coves responsible had best stay clear of Mayfair, however, as we are all on the alert, now.

What do you think about the mysterious recent disappearance of some items from your home?
Frankly, they are the least of my concern at the moment.

Would you share with us your opinion of Mr. Peter O'Brien? Is he an honourable gentleman, in your opinion?
(Both brows go up.) An honourable gentleman? Mr. O'Brien is the sort of man who likes to dig his own grave. If you give him enough space and time, he will hang himself. I have not the least desire to waste another word upon the addle-pated youth, but since you asked, suffice it to say that he is utterly beneath my notice.

Who is your best friend?
‘Best friend?’ I suppose you mean the acquaintance I value most? That could only be Miss Forsythe, surely you realize that.
What is a hobby you thoroughly enjoy?
Fencing. After riding, I suppose.

What is your favorite meal?

Now that is a question of taste [his eyes sparkle]. But not a topic of good conversation, surely. Do we wish to bore your readers? Suffice it to say that I never sit down to mutton, and the only rolls I touch are from Grosvenor Street.
What kind of tea do you drink and where might we find it currently?
I drink the same blend that the Regent uses—and it is found only through the best suppliers, I assure you. I cannot say where you will find the best tea, today, but I can tell you never to accept it off the street from a hawker. That stuff will kill an elephant!

One last question. How do you believe Ms. Burkard has handled yours and Miss Forsythe’s story? Have you enjoyed working with her?
Do you mean, Mrs. Burkard? I give her my compliments, actually. She was discreet enough not to show my every thought to the whole world, and she managed to convey the astonishing character of Miss Forsythe with an impressive degree of precision—so that no one could doubt my affection for her; Ariana is too winning,
which everyone must acknowledge. However, I do not advise any woman to aspire to writing novels—it is, after all, a strenuous undertaking. But I cannot fault Mrs. Burkard in this instance; I believe that the good example readers may find in Ariana excuses the author’s insistence upon writing the book.

What advice would you give a modern-day young man on courting a woman?
Young men today should follow the same advice a man of my day ought to use if he would increase his own happiness upon marriage; that is, he must choose a godly woman who will benefit not only himself, but the family heritage, the children, and the general welfare and happiness of the couple. Fortune-hunters should of course be avoided; and women of the world are no more to be trusted as to motives than a cat on the hunt; find yourself a godly woman, sir! Study the scripture and know the Word of God for yourself. That is my best advice for any man.

Mr. Mornay, thank you so much for your time. We’ve enjoyed our time with you. We wish you the best on your upcoming wedding, and on your future with your lovely bride.
Obliged. [A polite bow] Miss Forsythe would like to express her gratitude for your hospitality to me; and Mrs. Burkard, if I am not mistaken, wished to leave you a calling card. It contains her website address: http://www.LinoreRoseBurkard.com

.
[I watch him go, and don’t start fanning myself until after his coach has rolled down the drive.]

Linore has a wonderful newsletter on the Regency period. Please go to her website and sign up for it. Enjoy her website while you're there--lots of fun!
My Review of  THE HOUSE IN GROSVENOR SQUARE:
I like heroines that are feisty and speak their minds and Ariana Forsythe fits that characterization. Phillip Mornay is her opposite which always makes for a fun read. The Regency period in which this story is set is so interesting and the beliefs and convictions of its characters add depth. The tension and intrigue add more layers of interest, and I love the dialogue between Ariana and Phillip. The plot moves at a pace that kept me reading and all of the characters added to my entertainment.

Author Deanna Jewel Guest Blogs with Characters From Her New Novel, NEVER SURRENDER

WELCOME TO BETWEEN THE PAGES, DEANNA. I'm so looking forward to reading your interview with both heroes from Never Surrender - Brandon Wakiza and Taima. So I'm turning this page over to you.

Deanna: Lynda, thank you so much for having me as your guest today. I appreciate the opportunity to talk with your readers and introduce them to two characters close to my heart. For those who love reading time travel romance, I hope I’m able to spark enough interest that you’ll want your own copy! The ‘new cover’ is available online at Amazon and Barnes and Noble.

We're lucky enough to be on location in Dubois, Wyoming with both heroes from Never Surrender - Brandon Wakiza and Taima. If you've read the first two chapters of my novel at Bookbuzzr, you'll know both of them.in a valley between the Absaroka and Wind River mountain ranges when his people were free to roam wherever they wished, before Dubois was developed as a town in the late 1800s. Brandon is half Shoshone and lives in Dubois in the present time and Taima is half Shoshone and half white and lives in 1835.

This is Dubois as it looks pretty much today. I've been there and can attest to that as I've walked those wooden sidewalks. I've also eaten at the Cowboy Cafe, roamed the Mercantile Store and had a latte from the Pony Espresso back in 1997 before I ventured out to explore the mysterious Whiskey Basin. One can't explain how peaceful this city is with the surrounding snow-capped Rockies, watching as the children giggle when the stage coach pulls up to take them for a ride or to smell the fresh air scented with sagebrush. Dubois takes you back in time and if you've not there, I certainly suggest a visit. That would allow you to also take a trip to Whiskey Basin where the petroglyphs are and my story starts.

Deanna:  Brandon, thank you for being with us today. Forgive me for saying so but your eyes are so blue. A woman could easily be speechless trying to gaze into your soul. OK, on with the interview. Can you tell us about the day you first saw Kate in the gift shop?

Brandon:  It started with an inner pull I felt the instant I looked up at her in the store that day...a sense of familiarity yet I knew I'd never met her. We said a few words then she moved past me to look at something. I made my way to the door but couldn't step outside. I leaned against the door frame and listened as she talked with the old Indian; he's a good friend of mine. I knew I wanted to get to know her better and find out why I felt I knew her. She's a beautiful woman and she looked at ease in her tight jeans and sweatshirt that day. *he gives me a huge smile and a wink* She also had on a nice pair of snakeskin boots.

Deanna: Do you believe in fate?

Brandon:  I believe in a higher spirit that makes things happen that we're not aware of. One might dream of things in their future yet not understand them when the dream happens. I certainly felt that with Kate. Her emerald eyes pulled at something deep inside me and to this day, I still don't understand how we came to be in the same spot at the same time. I can only assume the Great Spirit was at work to bring us together.

Deanna:  What surprised you most about Kate?

Brandon:  Her interest in the petroglyphs. Somehow she knew about Whiskey Basin and I didn't want her exploring out there alone. I was surprised when she allowed me to go with her. She did insist on driving that day, too; her way of controlling her surroundings as best she could.

Deanna:  Taima, you're half white and I know you're proud of that. Can you tell us a bit about your parents?

Taima:  My father, Sakima, captured my mother when they were young from a situation similar to how Kate came into my 'possession' if you will. My parents eventually fell in love and as I grew up, my mother taught me English as well as many of my people. She knew one day I would need to know English. My father doted on her and I'd always hoped I would find a woman to love me the same way. I learned to respect a woman's mind and her intuition because my mother was a smart woman. She taught us many things.

Deanna: I know it's hard to talk about, but your mother and wife were killed at the same time, correct?

Taima: They were and yes, it is still hard to talk about. White men invaded our camp while many of our warriors were on a hunting trip. The cruelty inflicted on both of them that day is unspeakable and started my hatred toward the white man. My wife, Witashnah, was a beautiful woman, slender, long black hair; she loved everyone and her eyes could melt a man's heart. Our love would have lasted an eternity.

Deanna: Tell us a bit about Taima, the leader of his people.

Taima:  My parents taught me that there is one, maybe two, true loves on one life. I'd already lost the one true love in my life and didn't want to replace her. My father was a one-woman man and I guess I followed in his footsteps in that respect. When I lost Witashnah, I knew there would be no replacing her. No one else could fulfill the need in my heart that she filled, nor replace her as my soul mate. I refused to even look at other women as a replacement for her.

Deanna:  Taima, from the moment you rescued Kate from the Blackfoot warrior that day, neither of you got along. Can you explain any of that to us?

Taima: *he laughed out loud* Kate is an emotionally strong woman with a passion for life; one who thinks she can control her surroundings and the people in it. She's opinionated and doesn't hide that; she spoke her mind right from the beginning, unaware that I understood every word she said. But she had no idea of the dangers lurking in the untamed wild of the mountains. She insisted I release her and that was not an option...and the fact that I wasn't about to release a beautiful woman even though I didn't want her for myself.

Deanna:  One last thing...the emerald stone ring you wear on the leather strip around your neck. I have to ask about it?

Taima: *his long fingers caress the ring at his throat*  I can't say a word about this, I'm sorry. Your readers will have to finish the story to understand the meaning behind this ring. *wink*

Deanna:  I don't want to spoil the story for our readers so we'll stop there. Thank you both for being here, for letting our readers see into my two main characters. I know after they read your story, they will fall in love with both of you the same way I did.

Each book is over 400 pages and touches on many of the areas your Freshman or soon to be GRAD will be thinking about. And how nice to have all that information in two easy to read and well laid out guides. Some of the features I enjoyed were;
  • The Talking Heads tip boxes
  • The top 5 or 10 lists
  • Questionnaires and sample letters
Everything I could imagine a new college Freshman or soon to be GRAD could need advice on is covered in these books. From Facebook, to dorm life, campus activities, classes, to finance, to moving, to job hunting, to relationships, to parental help, etc.

Running The Books by Avi Steinberg

Running The Books - The Adventures of an Accidental Prison Librarian
    By Avi Steinberg

    About the Book:
Avi Steinberg is stumped. After defecting from yeshiva to Harvard, he has only a senior thesis essay on Bugs Bunny to show for his effort. While his friends and classmates advance in the world, he remains stuck at a crossroads, unable to meet the lofty expectations of his Orthodox Jewish upbringing. And his romantic existence as a freelance obituary writer just isn’t cutting it. Seeking direction—and dental insurance—Steinberg takes a job as a librarian in a tough Boston prison.

The prison library counter, his new post, attracts con men, minor prophets, ghosts, and an assortment of quirky regulars searching for the perfect book and a connection to the outside world. There’s an anxious pimp who solicits Steinberg’s help in writing a memoir. A passionate gangster who dreams of hosting a cooking show titled Thug Sizzle. A disgruntled officer who instigates a major feud over a Post-it note. A doomed ex-stripper who asks Steinberg to orchestrate a reunion with her estranged son, himself an inmate. Over time, Steinberg is drawn into the accidental community of outcasts that has formed among his bookshelves — a drama he recounts with heartbreak and humor. But when the struggles of the prison library — between life and death, love and loyalty — become personal, Steinberg is forced to take sides.

Running the Books is a trenchant exploration of prison culture and an entertaining tale of one young man’s earnest attempt to find his place in the world while trying not to get fired in the process.

About the Author: Avi Steinberg was born in Jerusalem and raised in Cleveland and Boston. His work has appeared in the New York Times Magazine, Boston Globe, New York Review of Books, Salon, the Paris Review and the Daily Beast and others. He is both a cat and a dog person.

    My Thoughts:
I didn't know what to expect when I started this book. That was probably a good thing because it's not really like anything I've ever read before. The gritty reality didn't sugarcoat a complex situation or put a pretty face on prison life. It didn't put forth the idea that books, literacy, or creative writing were the latest miracle tools for rehabilitating hardened prisoners. But it did draw me into a world I know little about. It introduced me to people, some of which I hope I never meet. But there were other inmates that made me wonder and gave me reason to question society. And the Law Code that regulates the mental attitude and sets the spirit of such a confined community made me stop reading and ponder the origin of such thinking. I don't know Mr Steinberg, but from his writing, I think he's the perfect person to have written this book. His depth of insight, his willingness to see beyond just faces, his perceptions and empathetic spirit are what gives this book it's humanity.

    Page 167:
"Snitching was serious business. When you entered the prison, you would be asked to name people. How you named those people made you either a con or a cop. There was no third option, no neutrality."

Either You're in or You're in the Way by Logan and Noah Miller

Either You're in or You're in the Way
    By Logan and Noah Miller

    About the Book:
When identical twin brothers, Logan and Noah Miller’s homeless father died alone in a jail cell, they vowed come hell or high water that their film, Touching Home, would be made as a dedication to their love for him. Either You’re In Or You’re In the Way is the amazing story of how—without a dime to their names nor a single meaningful contact in Hollywood—they managed to write, produce, act, and direct a feature film in under a year starring four-time Academy Award®-nominated actor Ed Harris (and a cast and crew with 11 Academy Awards® and 26 nominations). The Miller brothers’ incredible and comic gonzo story is essential reading for aspiring filmmakers and movie buffs, and readers looking for a fast-paced, thrill ride of heartbreak and redemption.

    About the Authors:
Logan and Noah Miller, identical twins raised as roofers in northern California, dreamt of being baseball stars. When that dream failed, they found professional success as bingo callers. Always staying together, the brothers were briefly suckered into the world of modeling, somehow avoided the circus, and finally, with 17 credit cards, pursued a career in filmmaking. In 2006, the brothers were awarded the Panavision New Filmmaker Grant, and their screenwriting, directorial, and acting debut Touching Home premiered at the San Francisco International Film Festival in April of 2008. They live in northern California and hold no degrees.

    My Thoughts:
If you don't want to have your emotions raked over the coals, If you don't want to watch a gut-wrenching account of the depth of human despair ant the heights of human accomplishments, don't read this book, because that is what this story about the quest to make a film documenting pivotal and crucial points of their life story will entail. It's a very good read. Informative, insightful, and  entertaining.

If there were any down side to this book for me, maybe two things stand out. It's a little bit slow in areas where it gets somewhat descriptive, and it's a little sketchy on characterization.

But those things don't detract from the fact that this book is a fun read that highlights the quality of hope and belief in the impossible. Logan and Noah Miller achieve some awesome things in relation to writing the screen play, directing and staring in their own movie, and writing the book that culminates the whole thing. It's a story worth telling, and definitely one worth reading. I'm glad I got a chance to read this book. It's unique.

A complimentary copy of this book was provided by the authors.

Author M. Kate Quinn Guest Blogs with Iris Stanton, the Heroine of Summer Iris

    M. Kate Quinn is a new author for me and I'm so pleased to have her as my guest. Let's start by letting Ms. Quinn tell us about herself and then, we'll enjoy the interview with Iris Stanton, the heroine of Summer Iris.

    About The Author:

After retiring from The Morris School District where she worked as a Financial Assistant to the Principal of Morristown High School, M. Kate Quinn, dedicated her time to the pursuit of her life-long dream of writing.

She is an active member of Liberty States Fiction Writers, Edison, NJ, as well as a member of New Jersey Romance Writers and Romance Writers of America.  M. Kate Quinn’s current release, Summer Iris, a romantic comedy published by The Wild Rose Press, is a summer favorite and has been named an August Top Pick by Fresh Fiction Newsletter.  Summer Iris is the first in a three-book series entitled The Perennials, where each heroine is named after a perennial flower.  Book two in the series, Moonlight and Violet, is due to release later this year.  M. Kate Quinn maintains an active blog and is a regular contributor to Pop Culture Divas blog and guest posts to other sites.  She writes a column she calls Boomer Humor for her neighborhood magazine and maintains a regular schedule of book signings, interviews, and appearances at book club meetings as well as other speaking events.

    M. Kate Quinn, a long-time native of northern New Jersey, currently lives in Ocean County, NJ with her husband and their fabulously handsome Siberian cat named Sammy.  A blended family, they have six grown children and two beautiful granddaughters.

    About the Book:
The last thing Iris Stanton feels like doing is celebrating her fiftieth birthday. She's divorced, has been downsized out of a job, and her post-marriage condo is for sale and she can't afford to buy it. And when her crazy, out-there best friend, Yvonne, offers her the use of a beach cottage for the summer, Iris thinks the idea is preposterous. That is, until she comes up with what could be a solution to her pending homelessness. Selling off her small piece of waterfront property would save the very roof over her head, so she heads to the shore with a mission.

The cottage is in the midst of renovations orchestrated by handsome flirtatious owner, Sam Hanratty. His roguish attention gets Iris' heart doing flips, jump starting it into remembering she's still a woman. Sam's foreman, Eddie Morgan, is the most annoying hulk she's ever met, and Iris's heart sinks like lead when she learns that he alone could sabotage the sale of her property.

Iris' heart gets a workout this summer, with a string of unlikely events that force her to turn inward to examine what makes her tick, what is her heart's true desire and who might hold the key.

    ******************
    Character Interview:

    Interviewer:
Iris, you found yourself in a precarious predicament.  Tell us about that.

    Iris:
I had been employed as a Media Assistant at a local elementary school for many years and my position was cut.  It happened at the worst possible time.  The condo that I’d been renting after my divorce had gone on the market and I didn’t have the funds to purchase it.  Plus, my daughter, Stephanie, my only child, was in grad school and living away from home. Not to mention it was my fiftieth birthday.  I was a mess.

    Interviewer:
But, then entered your best friend, Yvonne.  She, apparently, had a plan.

    Iris:
Yvonne’s always got a plan.  However, usually I can opt not to participate in whatever it is she’s cooking up.  But, this time it was my birthday present.

    Interviewer:
    What’d she give you?

    Iris:
The use of a beach cottage for the entire summer at the New Jersey shore.  It was in a little town by the name of Silver Crest, about an hour and a half from where I lived up in northern Jersey.  The idea came out of nowhere, which is so typical of my best friend, and it seemed preposterous.  Especially for someone like me.  I’m not known to venture too far outside the box, if you know what I mean.

    Interviewer:
    So, did you go?

    Iris:
Believe it or not, yes.  I threw caution to the wind and I went to the beach.

    Interviewer:
    How did you like it?

    Iris:
Although it took all the courage I could muster to seize the opportunity, I fell in love with the place.  The cottage, the people, the ocean.  All of it.

    Interviewer:
Speaking of the people.  I understand you met two men while you were a shore dweller.  Tell us about them.

    Iris:
Yes.  I met the owner of the cottage, Sam Hanratty.  Handsome, gregarious.  He was in the middle of renovating the cottage so we had plenty of occasion to be in each other’s company.  And, his foreman, Eddie Morgan, I met him, too.  From moment one the two of us just didn’t see eye to eye and he was around all the time.  Annoying the hell out of me.

    Interviewer:
What was the most important thing about that summer at the beach?

    Iris:
The woman I became because of it.

    Concrete Operational - The Project

    THE PROJECT: Concrete Operational
Operation Concrete, at its core, is a collaborative media project. It brings together the aesthetic and audio qualities of art and music around the power of the written word to provide the viewer, listener, reader, with a complete experience.

This immersive event is what Richard Galbraith considers as one possible future for the book, Richard is project lead and author of Concrete Operational, the novel that provides the content and themes for the artists and musicians.

He believes the debate amongst the publishing industry regarding, eBooks, eReaders, electronic ink, copyright, print on demand and everything else is secondary. Secondary to the true reasons for the written word, art and music: to explore the emotion that its creation derives.

Its future is how we evolve and ensure these ideals take priority.

Operation Concrete hopes to do this, by providing us with the facility to explore some of the deepest human emotions; anger, desire, love, jealousy and madness across three mediums.

We hope that, as you feel the music, as you absorb the art as you immerse yourself in the written word, you will find something that moves you, that helps you question life, and helps you move closer to finding a meaning behind it all.

Concrete Operational - The Short - The book trailer from ricgalbraith on Vimeo.

    THE NOVEL:  Concrete Operational
Germany Germany escaped a world that turned from the pursuit of greatness to
the pursuit of celebrity, the pursuit of fame. Now, hiding from a planet that is
absorbed, encapsulated and completely loyal to The Benefit and their show,
Germany and the others on their island struggle for survival and understanding
of what went wrong, and how they can possibly change things.

Richard Vortigern is a man at the pinnacle of the universe. He and his brethren,
The Universal Negotiators, have settled and pacified mankind, the human race
has come to a languid state, but Richard sees an end befitting of mankind’s
timeless struggle. He enacts a plan, one that will span the course of eons of
human history and turn humanity into children of the stars, an ultimate super
    being.

Richard’s plan needs someone, it needs a man, it needs one of times greatest
hero’s to ensure its success, it needs one man that changed things before, one
man with more fire and rage in his being than any other, it needs Germany
    Germany.

Time, fate, causality, love, fear, might and the power of will cross as Richard puts
in motion his plan and Germany Germany comes to understand the nature of the
universe, of time, of being, in this unrelenting look into the human condition and
    why we are all here.

Find more about the novel and the independent collaborative art project that
    surrounds it at: http://www.operationconcrete.com

My Thoughts: Beautiful.- Thought-provoking - Heart-racing experience - are just a few of the feelings that listening, viewing, and reading this wonderful collection brought to my mind. What a study in emotion! What a genius in rendering those emotions into art! What a journey of discovery to hear the music!

I feel really privileged that I had an opportunity to review this truly unique and special collection of Art, Music, and storytelling at it's best.

The book is engrossing, to say the least. I won't recount the story, as you have the synopsis above, but I do want to share a paragraph with you that's found on page 170.

"Come, i understand, no one else does, no one else can explain what the purpose of all this is, no one else can tell you what you want to know. No one else can make you complete, you should trust me, Germany, you deserve the answers to the universe, and that is exactly what you will receive."

I was already immersed in this strange tail, but at this point in the book I'm so hooked I don't stop to eat, I just keep reading. I'm sure I didn't get all the nuances of this story in the first reading, so I plan to read it again. The same goes for the ART and MUSIC. I think one could just keep peeling back the layers and keep finding new revelations. It's all FICTION, of course, but what a ride!
