About The Book:

About The Author:
There’s a phrase in the South: “telling stories”, which means telling lies. Growing up, Karen Metcalf told a lot of stories, which wasn’t always a good thing.She was raised on the Outer Banks of North Carolina, where she spent most of her time reading science fiction and horror. She continues to explore those worlds through her writing, today.
Karen is 23 years old, and lives in Tucson, Arizona.

Charcter Interview:
I meet Carly on a back porch, somewhere, sometime; I’d rather not say. There is a storm rolling in and she watches the approaching clouds with a smirk.
Karen: You were sixteen when IN THE STORM began; tell me about your childhood.
Carly: Well, my father died when I was young, and I don’t have many memories of him. My mother raised me alone for several years, though she dated around a lot. Mitchell was born when I was eleven, and we don’t even know who his father is. I did most of the raising, as my mother was too busy partying. Richard was just another of her drunken boyfriends, but for some reason he stuck around longer. When she took off, she left him the house, so he agreed to keep us. I think he considered us housekeeping for the most part.
Karen: We know that one of the things that contributed to your ability to go to the storm world was your anger. Can you tell me more about that?
Carly: I had to learn to control my anger pretty early on. My mother was young, stupid, and not ready to have me when she did. She was more concerned with her own life, and I was just a side note. A lot of men entered our lives and exited just as quickly. I had to tiptoe around everyone’s moods, tempers, and personalities. I learned to put up a façade and pretend that I didn’t see or hear anything, and was just a stupid kid. In the meantime, I was cleaning my mom’s puke off the sheets. Holding all of this in for a very long time can’t be healthy, and one day I would inevitably snap.
Karen: Do you think other people have their own storm worlds?
Carly: I like to think we all have a storm world. Most of the world is lucky enough to never need it. I say if you haven’t found your sanctuary yet, it just might not be time for you. It’s proof that things can always get worse, so maybe this isn’t as bad as you think it is. But don’t worry; it will always be out there waiting for you when you need it the most. Sort of the like the poem, “Footprints”.
Karen: What advice do you have for other teens your age going through similar troubles at home?
Carly: Childhood is but a portion of your life. It is supposed to be the best part, but not for all of us. You have the choice to make your life what you want, and you don’t have to settle for the life someone hands to you. Have faith in yourself, and don’t ever let them break you. You are a wonderful person, and this too will pass.
